Angela BowerSpeech & Language Therapist
Angela Bower
The role of a speech and language therapist (SaLT) is to assess and treat speech, language and communication difficulties in people of all ages, to enable them to communicate to the best of their ability.
Studies show that between 50-100% of young people with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties have underlying speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).
Pupils with SLCN can find it difficult to understand vocabulary used in the classroom, understand complex instructions, understand time, sequence their ideas and express themselves fully or appropriately. The SaLT at Melrose works closely with school staff to ensure that pupils with SLCN are able to learn in a language-inclusive environment, access the curriculum and develop their communication skills. For pupils with statements for SLCN, this can involve 1:1 and small group work. This work is further supported by a Learning Support Assistant with specialist speech and language training.
